My Career Change: Marques Ogden Gives Back Through Public Speaking

When a professional athlete’s playing days are over, many do not realize that athlete’s career in another field is often just the beginning. As part of VIKTRE’s dedication to not only drive interaction between athletes and their fans, but also provide other athletes with inspiration on their own career transition, our Career team made it a priority to show how successful many athletes have been since their playing days ended in a feature called “My Career Change.”

In this installment of “My Career Change,” we interviewed former NFL offensive lineman Marques Ogden.

The Washington, D.C. – native graduated from Howard University in 2002 with a degree in finance with aspirations of working on Wall Street before embarking on a professional football career. He began planning for life after the game in 2005 and participated in a University of Southern California program on project development and construction designed specifically for NFL players. As you will read in the interview, Ogden wants to help other athletes find success based on what he’s learned through his transition.

How did you get into your new career?

I wanted to help people learn from my mistakes and share teaching points to help them be successful in their own lives.

What was the biggest challenge you faced making your transition?

Getting my first PAID job took me 30 months.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far in your new career?

Having the NFL hire me to help teach current players how to public speak, starting in 2018.

What advice do you have for athletes making their career change?

“Don’t give up before you get really started.”
