Could You Find Happiness as a Sports Owner?
Bringing former athletes and people like you closer to the things that provide personal fulfillment is a big reason why I have enjoyed the sports franchise space for so long, and one of my clients, Frank Costa, is very much like you and I.
Frank reached out to me in early 2012. Unbeknownst to me, Frank and his wife Betsy had recently suffered through a terrible personal tragedy. As Frank explained it, they decided to treat themselves to a trip to Jupiter, FL to watch some Spring Training baseball and take a break from it all. After taking in a Cardinals game one day, Betsy turned to Frank and said, “Wouldn’t it be nice to own a baseball team?”
Of course, like most people, they didn’t quite think that it was actually possible, but Frank decided to research the possibility, and contacted me to learn more.
Soon after, Frank and Betsy acquired a minority stake in the Mobile BayBears (AA) just before the 2012 season began, and started enjoying the perks of ownership while following the team in the Southern League. As luck would have it, the BayBears won the Southern League Championship that very first year, and Frank got a much unexpected gift, his very own Championship ring!
To this day, I still remember him sending me a picture of it on Betsy’s hand. Needless to say, they were thrilled by their decision and have continued to enjoy baseball ownership to this day (albeit no additional rings as of yet).
I caught up with Frank today to let him know that I wanted to share his story with you, and he sounded as excited as the day he became a baseball owner almost five years ago, telling me about some of the Major League Baseball player he watched play for him in Mobile, and that he was excited by the new Angels affiliation. This story truly made my day.
Frank is just one of many people I have introduced to sports team ownership, and I’d be thrilled to have a chat with you to demonstrate how easy it can be to join Frank as a major or minor league professional sports team owner.
