Managing Your Daily Stress

Let’s face it: we all get stressed. From the outside looking in, it is easy to see that these moments will pass, but when you’re in the heat of the moment it may seem like you’re in a never-ending downward spiral of stress. In order to manage the stress of our day-to-day lives, you’re not alone. But there are some things you can do to get through these difficult times.

More often than not, the people who complain about being stressed all the time are also those who don’t know how to effectively manage their stress or prioritize stress management. While it seems counterintuitive, experiencing some level of stress is actually good for us. Without stress, it becomes easy to go through the motions and coast through our daily lives.

Different industries are often thought of as being more stressful than others. For example, a trauma surgeon might experience more stress than an accountant. However, this isn’t always the case. If either of these professionals do not manage their stress effectively, their livelihood (and that of others) may struggle. According to Deepak Chopra, “it isn’t the pace of life that determines how high your stress levels are, it’s what you do every day to prevent stress from occurring.” To do so, there are a few things you can incorporate into your daily routine.

Remove Yourself From Stressful Environments

While it usually isn’t possible to get up from your desk and walk out the door when you are stressed, you can get up and move around for a bit. Grab some water, take a walk, go outside, etc. Temporarily removing yourself from the situation can give you some clarity to attack the task in front of you from a different perspective.

There is a reason that Apple incorporated the “Breathe” app into their new WatchOS. Far too often we forget to take time to simply breathe deeply throughout the day. When you take the time to focus on your breathing, you become calmer and are able to clear your mind. Make time to breathe when you encounter a stressful situation. You’d be surprised how good you may feel.

Exercise

This is one of the most common stress relievers. When we have a tough day at work, there is nothing better than taking out your frustrations at the gym and bettering yourself. Some of your greatest workouts may happen after a stressful encounter at work. A Harvard study found that if you exercise daily, you can prolong your life by 10+ years. Making time to exercise will not only help you relieve your stress, but also benefit your physical and mental health.

Take Time to Disconnect

We, as a society, have become increasingly reliant on our devices (mobile, tablet, laptop, etc.). As a result, we are constantly connected to our work. While this isn’t always a bad thing, it can become difficult to separate ourselves from the stress that constantly follows us.

If this is the case, you must make time to disconnect from your devices. Spend time with those who matter most to you; your family, your dog, your friends, whoever it may be. This time will not only serve as a distraction from whatever is plaguing you, but it can also benefit your mental health at the same time. Building close connections not only strengthens your sense of belonging, but it also increases your self-confidence and can make you happier.

While some stress may be a good thing, too much stress can put you over the edge. If you have felt particularly stressed out lately, take some time for yourself and follow these tips to prioritize your stress management.
